Last Day of 2014

Hello all! This is my last post for the year 2014. How exciting is that?!

It has been a rather tough year and I hope next year will be much better. I have some ideas for Upcoming posts, but mostly it will be more Empties posts and reviews of products. I really hope the coming year is better than the last.

Watch out for My New Years Resolutions post tomorrow.

October Empties 2014 Part One

Wow. this is super late. Be ready for a whole bunch of Empties posts coming your way!

It seems like October just came and went. I used a bunch more products this month than I thought I would. I have split the post into 3 parts so they aren't ridiculously long and take forever to load.

My October Empties! I used 19 products this month!
135. Paul Mitchell Original Awapuhi Shampoo .7 fl oz
(see # 128in September post)

136. Facial Bar in Citrus Sage by Marietta Corp. 19 grams / .67 oz
This is such a wonderful smelling soap. I picked it up at a hotel on one of my trips to Birmingham for a family wedding. It doesn't smell like citrus or sage that much. It just smells clean. I used this in the shower as a facial and body bar. I know next to nothing about the Marietta corporation, but they are not cruelty free.

137. Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara 01 Extreme Black (1oz)
My grandmother gave me this sample mascara a while ago and I just got around to using it. The good things first: It was very black. A lot of times black mascaras tend to look grey on my lashes because they are light colored on the tips. I did not find that to be the case with this product. I loved the Volumizing effect this had on my lashes. It made them look full and thick without making clumps or creating spider leg lashes. The cons: It is not cruelty free and I did not like the smell. I will not repurchase.

The first six products are all sample or travel size.
138. Bodycology Enchanted Forest Fragrance Mist 2 FL oz
I picked this perfume up while in college. It was one of those fragrances that smells fantastic in the store, but smells horrible once you have been wearing it for an hour or two. I ended up combining the scent with rose water body creme and it toned it down to the point where I began so like the scent. I did some research about the company that owns Bodycology, Advanced Beauty Systems Inc, and could not find an animal testing statement anywhere. The phrase "This finished product is not tested on animals " is placed on the packaging of this product. This tends to imply that the individual products are tested on animals  (which is usually the case when this sentence is used). I will not repurchase from this company.

139. Harvey Prince Ageless Body Creme 15 ml (cruelty free and vegan! )
I got this sample in one of my birchboxes (maybe September?) This is hands down my favorite bodes creme I have ever tried. I don't use lotion or creme much now that I'm back in Louisiana where it is humid year-round. I do use it occasionally though: after I shave my legs or exfoliate. The scent is "pink grapefruit and Vanilla" , but to me it mostly smells of a general sweet fruitiness. It isn't your typical citrus scent. this is more fun and bouncy than lemon or orange would be. the Shea butter in the formula makes my skin soak up moisture, but doesn't leave a greasy residue. I absolutely love the smell of this product and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves light fruity Scents. I won't be repurchasing this as a lotion, but I did buy the companion perfume: AGELESS.

140. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion + 1 fl oz
I've used many of the lotions and gels in the Clinique Skincare line, but this is a reformulated version for very dry skin. I don't like the reformulation at all. the smell is more chemical and the lotion leaves a residue on the skin. I used this as a deep conditioner at night only. I Know my mom has also used this new reformer lotion and not liked it as well. I do not recommend this product. Clinique is not a cruelty free company.

Stay tuned for Part 2, Coming soon!

Nature Pics

Hey y'all! This is another post i never uploaded from the beginning of October. I took some pictures in the yard. Here they are :) I hope you enjoy!

Sweet Olive in the front yard. I love the smell of sweet olive. They are planted all over New Orleans and Metaire and they smell fantastic. Whenever I smell them, I think of home and late summer/autumn.
I have no idea what these are, but they are all over my front yard and by our front porch. I love that they look furry. AND THEY ARE PURPLE! I love purple flowers.
These are another plant of unknown species. It is like a pod/berry thing. I love it!
Live Oak in the front yard! With purple and yellow flowers.
Yellow flowers of awesomeness!

I hope you enjoyed these pictures!  I'm working on my empties posts and they should be ready I the next few days!

Anything you can eat, I can eat vegan

Anything you can eat, I can eat vegan. I can eat anything vegan-er than you!

So this was a post I wrote wayback in October . Because I never posted it, I am posting it now. Enjoy the pictures.

For my mom's birthday we went to Macaroni Grill for dinner. I really love their create-your-own pastas. This was Cappelini with an Olive Oil Garlic sauce. It contained broccolini, mushroons, tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, and asparagus. It was really tasty!
And this is the drawing I made on the table cloth for my mom... I love drawing on the paper table coverings when they leave crayons.

And this is probably the most basic thing I have eaten in a while. It's tofu cooked in Soy Sauce and sesame oil on top of rosemary sea salt bread.
Hey look! Another stir fry! This one is with Tofu, bok choy, watercress, mushrooms, and jasmine rice cooked in soy sauce and sesame oil.
And here are the leftovers that I ate at the next meal. I love leftovers because the flavors really merge together when they have all been sitting there marinating for a few hours.
This is a new kind of chocolate I tried at the store. It even says vegan on the back of the package (love it when they do that!). This chocolate is super rich and really satisfies any chocolate craving with just one square.
Quinoa burgers on rosemary sea salt bread with ketchup, mustard, and vegenaise. Pickles on the side!

Ramen with tofu, watercress, baby corn, mung bean sprouts, soy sauce, and sesame oil. This was very tasty and filling. I used to eat ramen every day in my latter years of college. This was the first time in a while that I had bought some. A splurge treat instead of regular noodles or rice.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Stay tuned for more to come!

Merry Christmas

Hello all! Merry Christmas!
I know it has been a long time since I posted, but I promise to post new material soon. I've been very active on my other social media platforms recently, so if you want to hear more about what I've been doing in my day to day of, follow my on instagram  (KnittingOpera ).
It was a pretty good Christmas, even though I didn't get to see my grandmother. I did get to see my aunt and cook some wonderful vegan food, so life is good.
Talk at you later!

Quick Update

Hello All!

I haven't posted in over a month. Real life got in the way. I did about a week of NaNoWriMo before I had to stop, but I did get a chunk of writing done on my story and fleshed out some of the background information. Maybe when I have more written I'll start posting it on FictionPress.

I've been pretty busy with ballet, church, and Christmas Caroling. I am not ready for it to be December. When did this happen?!

It's been a really hard time for me lately with several church members passing away and having to sing at a few funerals. I actually have to sing at one today. It's always really hard trying not to cry. I have a hard time singing while crying, so I have to be extra careful with my tears.

I have finally gotten a Twitter. You can follow me @darksunnygirl. I've been using it and tumblr more and more because it is easier to update from my phone.

Sometime in the next few weeks I will be posting lots of empties posts and reviews of products. Be ready for them!

Until next time!

I eat vegan food and love it

Vegan Food For The Win!

Hey Everyone! I'm back with another food post. I have a lot of posts that I'm working on (Mordor Updates, Makeup Reviews, and more...) but none of them are ready. So... you are getting more food pictures! I hope you like it!

Garden Herb vegan burger on olive bread with garlic dill pickles, vegenaise, ketchup, mustard, and Zapp's BBQ chips.

Quinoa Burgers on Olive Bread. Ketchup, mustard, and vegenaise on the burgers and Zapp's BBQ chips on the side.

Angel Hair with soy sauce, liquid aminos, and sesame oil.

Leftover Lasagna (remember that post from last week? That lasagna!)
My mom and I stopped by the Fresh Market and I picked up some vegan sushi. This is a really fantastic spring roll! (I didn't eat the white sauce.)
Here we have vegan sushi made with brown rice. I try to et brown rice when I can to get that little bit extra nutrition that white rice lacks.

Here you can see the wonderful spring rolls dipped in the sweet chili dipping sauce.
And here is a close up of the vegan sushi. I drizzled soy sauce on top of the whole package since I was planning on eating the whole thing. The only downside to eating vegan at a sushi restaurant is that you have to order about twice as much food to stay full. Eating one pack of sushi will only keep me from being hungry for an hour or so (the avocado adds another hour), so I have to either eat more sushi, or eat a snack later.

I hope you have enjoyed this post. Check out my next food post!

NaNoWriMo and More

So, you might be able to tell from the title, I'm going to be doing National Novel Writing Month in November. It is a challenge to write a small novel (50,000 words) in 30 days. I haven't actually written any stories since 2009/2010, so I'm pretty nervous about just starting to write a book. I am hoping that this will get me out of the writing slump I have been in for a while.

Because I will be attempting to write ~2000 words a day, I will be only posting one blog per week in November. I will be using all my writing abilities for my story and not for my blog... so what can you expect for November?

1. October Makeup Empties... this will probably come later in the month because I think I will have a ton of products to discuss and it will take some time for me to do all the research I need for the post.

2. Walk to Mordor Large Update: weeks 44 through 50 or so. I'll also talk about my first year doing Walk to Mordor and how much longer I believe it will take for me to complete the walk.

3. a huge food pictures post... this won't be too difficult, so I might do a few of these.

4. an update on my NaNoWriMo at the end of the month.

So... that's it for now... look out tomorrow for another food post!

I ate stuff

I ate stuff. What a shocker! Here are some things I ate recently.
Zapp's are local kettle style chips that come in a huge variety of flavors. This was a flavor they had at the store that didn't contain dairy (why must salt and vinegar have milk in it, why!?!), so I got Cajun Dill Gator-Tators. OMG! These are amazing! They are pretty salty, but really great.
Sesame garlic noodles in a box from the store. I keep buying these for days when I have no time to cook. They are really great.

One of my favorite salads ever. This is Coffee Raini's Curry Chicken Salad (without the chicken). It is a mix of lettuce, cabbage, carrots, raisings, apples, grapes, and coconut flakes all mixed with a sweet curry dressing. So yummy!
Earth Balance White Cheddar Mac n Cheese with Steamed Broccoli.
Leftover Homemade Lasagna.
Garden Herb vegan burger with pickles, mustard, ketchup, vegenaise, on olive bread!

This is the last of my Teese Cheddar vegan cheese on olive bread that I nuked in the microwave. It doesn't microwave very well, but it still tasted ok.

And last, but not least, we have BBQ flavored Zapp's Potato chips. I liked these almost as much as the dill gator-tators.

Have any of you tried Zapp's? What are your favorite flavors?

Walk to Mordor Update Weeks 42 and 43

Hello All! I'm back with my WTM Updates! It has been a really long time since I did one (July, if you can believe it!) and I'm here to bring them back, since I'm trying to step up my fitness in these next few weeks. If you haven't heard of  Walk to Mordor, it just means that I'm tracking my mileage and tracking how long it is going to take me to get to Mordor and back to the Shire following Frodo as he brings the ring to Mordor. I like the idea of using a fantasy world as a motivational tool to get fit.
As I've been trying to organize my posting schedule on my blog, I've decided to do Walk to Mordor Mondays, so all my Mordor and fitness posts will be on Mondays from here on out. My hope is to update every other week and the other Mondays will be days to talk about other cool fitness things like products and exercises. Here is my update from weeks 42 and 43!

Things I've Been Loving

Another Things I've Been Loving post for you guys!

I've been really busy these past few weeks, so I haven't had much time for discovering new things. I have been, however, rediscovering old things that I had forgotten that I loved. This post is all about those old things I had forgotten about, and I'm not quite sure how I've been going on without them in my life.

1. Evanescence- I used to listen to Evanescence almost every day for my last two years of high school. I fell in love with the song "Lithium" from The Open Door. It was the first song I heard/ watched the music video for that I said "I have to get this" the moment I first heard it. Some of my other favorite songs by Evanescence are "Going Under", "Imaginary", "My Immortal", and "Everybody's Fool" from Fallen. My favorites from The Open Door are "Call Me When You're Sober", "Lacrymosa", and "Good Enough". The only song from Evanescence that I could say is a favorite is "What You Want". I haven't listened to the album enough to feel like I could say any of the others are my favorites. Here is "Lithium" if you want to watch it.
I love the opening lyrics:

Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside.
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without...
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow.
Oh, but God, I want to let it go.

This describes perfectly (for me at least) the feeling of how I felt when I was on depression meds. I felt like I was being bottled up and distant from my emotions. Is it better to feel like you are crying all the time, every day, or to feel empty? It's a hard choice. Nothing is more strange than feeling guilty about wanting to feel sad again because you miss it. Welcome to my internal battles.

2. Doctor Who- I finally watched The Day of the Doctor and the ending of Matt Smith's time as Dr. Who. I bawled my eyes out, it was so emotional. Now I just have to catch up on this season before Saturday... yeah... not going to happen. But I'll probably read the episode synopses and move on with life. And this was my favorite line in this season:

3. The Vegan Peach- I've been watching videos by TheVeganPeach on YouTube for a while now and I love that she "tells it like it is". Her videos are really refreshing and real and have no "fakeness" that some of the vegan community on YouTube have become. I highly recommend her blog and her videos! Here is one of her videos about why honey is not vegan:

4. The Dollar Tree- I used to go there all the time in college. I stopped going when I came home because it was easier to go to other stores. However, they have the best Halloween decorations and they are only $1! I also have found some really great unbreakable glassware (I have glasses I have dropped onto wood floors several times, and they are still going strong). I got some really great black and purple fake flowers with glittery plastic spiders in them to stick in some glass bottles I found at Michaels. There we go. Halloween decorations done! Check out their Halloween products here!

That's it for now, Peeps! What are some of the things you have been loving recently?

Vegan Food Pictures

I post a lot of pictures of food here. I bet you already figured that out, huh?
This is a Yves Vegan turkey sandwich on Ciabatta bread with Vegenaise and Mustard. I'm not the hugest fan of this sliced vegan deli meat, but it was better than the Canadian Bacon I tried from the same brand.
Tofu, mushrooms, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and Braggs liquid aminos over rice noodles. It tasted better because I ate it with chopsticks. I am a firm believer that how you eat your food determines the taste just as much as what you are eating. Chopsticks make it taste better. No joke.
Olive bread with green herb vegan burger, pickles, and vegenaise. I found these vegan burgers at Rouses and I like them much better than the Quinoa burgers I have been finding at some stores. They are really green compared to how they look on the box, but they taste really good.
I decided to make lasagna and show you what I made it with. I have some no-boil lasagna noodles, two tubes of pesto, Teese mozzarella vegan cheese, TVP rehydrated with liquid smoke and water, thick and zesty tomato sauce, petite diced tomatoes, oregano leaves, and granulated garlic. Not pictured: tomato paste in the tube... it's hanging out in the refrigerator.

Here you can see the final product in the pan.
And finally on the plate! I always put the pesto on the same layer as the vegan cheese because the flavors blend best that way.

What are your favorite ingredients for lasagna? Comment down below!

September Empties 2014

Back again with Empties!

September 2014 Empties!
This past month was another where I used up lots of samples and soap! I must have really liked being clean this month.

* denotes cruelty free
** denotes cruelty free with parent company that tests on animals
V denotes vegan product
BOLD denotes a product I will repurchase

117. ProTerra Marine Sea Kelp Shampoo (marriettasorp.com)
I got this shampoo at a hotel several years ago. It is probably one of the best shampoos I've ever gotten at a hotel. The kelp in the shampoo makes my hair feel super smooth, light, and clean. The scent is slightly perfume-y, but not in a bad way. It is reminiscent of the sea shore and salt water, but with a hint of something else in it I can't place. It is almost impossible to find information about this brand, the ingredients in the products, or anything else about them. This is the most comprehensive information I could find on them. As you can see, not very helpful. I will not be purchasing this in the future despite the way it made my hair feel.

118. L'Occitane Verbena Shampoo 1 Fl oz (30 ml)
Verbena is one of those scents that I have recently discovered that I really love. I have had this little shampoo sample for a while (a hotel sample), and I recently decided to use it. Wow! It worked really well. And it made my hair smell great. The reason I'm not going to buy this? It's not cruelty free. Simple as that.

119. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief .5 oz (15 ml)
This was a sample my mom had given me. I decided to use this one because I only needed to apply it once a day and it kept me from having dry skin or irritated skin all day. The only problem I had with this was that I didn't really like the smell. It wasn't a bad smell, but it was definitely a chemical one. It is a clear gel moisturizer and definitely moisturizes. Clinique (a subsidiary of Estee Lauder) tests on animals. I will not be repurchasing this.

120. Dove Invisible Solid Antiperspirant and Deodorant Powder Scent .5 oz (14 grams)
There are several reasons why this is probably one of the worst deodorants I've ever bought. First, this is one of those little tiny ones you can buy at the store to take with you on trips. I bought this ages ago when I was trying out different brands of deodorant to see if they worked on me or not. It somehow migrated to my ballet bag and never left. There was very little product in the container and wasn't really worth the waste of all the plastic packaging it came in. Second, it smells really bad. Powder scent it not my favorite scent in the first place, so I should have known I wouldn't like this. But this smells like old grandmas at the nursing home instead of regular powder scented deodorant. Third, it contains aluminum as an anti-perspirant, which has been linked to breast cancer. Fourth, Dove is owned by Unilever, one of the largest animal testing companies on the market. Fifth, this deodorant doesn't really work for me. It would work for maybe four or five hours before I started to smell. Not good for someone who lives in a place where you sweat nine months out of the year. I will never buy this product again.

121. Bath and Body Works Signature Collection Rainkissed Leaves Volumizing Shampoo 1 Fl oz (29 ml)**
In my April Empties I talked about the accompanying conditioner to this shampoo. This product smells like the conditioner: fresh cut grass, summer rain, and green leaves that have just begun to grow in early spring. It made me feel like I had stepped into an alternate reality where grass grew indoors and everything was bright, fresh, and new. I love crisp, fresh scents like this and would love to smell this scent all the time. I'm not sure this is available as a shampoo anymore (or maybe it is only available at hotels, like this sample size?) as I couldn't find it on the website, so I obviously won't repurchase this product.

122. Secret Natural Mineral Invisible Solid Eucalyptus Blossom Antiperspirant and Deodorant 2.6 oz (73 grams)
I feel like I've used up so many of these Secret deodorants over the past nine months. This one happens to be Eucalyptus Blossom scented. I liked the scent a lot more than I thought I would. It's almost a fruity floral that isn't too prominent throughout the day, but still smells great twelve hours after you have first put it on. It even stood up to ballet class sweat. However, Secret is owned by Proctor and Gamble and is therefore not cruelty free. I will not repurchase it.

123. Snowbird Bar Soap
I used another of these soaps. You can see what I said about it last month here. But know that I love this stuff!

124. Kiss My Face Natural Active Life Aluminum Free Deodorant Lavender 2.48 oz (70 grams)* (v?)
This is one of those products that I really wanted to work. I tried it for a while, stopped using it because I didn't like it, tried it again, and now I'm throwing it away. I hated the way this made me smell. It wasn't like the deodorant wasn't working, because it wasn't body odor smell. I think the lavender oil or whatever was in this reacted badly to my skin. It made me smell horrible! I had to wash with three or four different soaps before I would get the smell off my body. This did not work for me at all. I usually use stick deodorants when I go to ballet class and a salt crystal deodorant for all the other times. This was not the deodorant for me. Kiss My Face is a really fantastic brand that has many natural and cruelty free products. Their website was down when I tried to access it recently, so I can't find out if their glycerin is vegan or not, but I believe that it is. I will never ever repurchase this.

125. Psst! Instant Dry Shampoo (Freeman) 1.76 oz (50 grams)*
I don't usually use dry shampoo, but I have used this brand before and I like this brand more than some others. It doesn't have an overpowering scent and isn't noticeable in my hair after brushing it out a little. If I planned to use dry shampoo more, I would buy this over any of the other brands I have tried. However, I don't like using aerosol sprays. They contain butane. Who wants to keep butane in your bathroom? Not me. Aerosol sprays are also really bad for the environment, so I try to stay away from them for that reason. Therefor, I will not be repurchasing this.

126. elf  shine eraser oil blotting sheets (50 count)*v
I've used several of these lovely little oil blotting sheet packets in the past few years. It was one of the first products I bought from www.eyeslipsface.com, and one that I have repurchased many times. I have about four packs of these floating around in my room, purse, dance bag, and bathroom. They are little pieces of paper that absorb facial oil so it won't totally break down all of your makeup. I find that these work just as well and even better than some higher end blotting sheets I have tried (shishedo and clean & clear are the brands that come to mind) and they only cost $1 for a pack of 50. If you used two of these a day for a year, you would spend about the same amount you would pay for one pack of high end blotting sheets. I will definitely be repurchasing this in the future.

127. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief  .5 oz (15 ml)
See 119 above

128. Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo .7 fl oz (20.7 ml)*v
This shampoo smells life fruity heaven. It is almost reminds me of L'Oreal Kids fruity scent (I happen to like that sort of watermelon-y scent, but many people aren't) so I really loved it. It made my hair so soft and so shiny and cleaned exceptionally well. The best thing about this product? It is cruelty free and vegan. I will be repurchasing this in the future, once I use up the many bottles of shampoo I have already.

129. The Body Shop Aloe Gentle Shower Cream 8.4 fl oz (250 ml)**
Shower gel is one of those products that I use for a few months, then I won't touch for half a year. Because of this I have a half dozen half-used bottles hanging out in my bathroom. This was one of those bottles I have had for a while now. It was gifted to me by a friend who was moving back to Ireland and was getting rid of the things she didn't have room for in her suitcase. I liked the way this shower cream made my skin feel: smooth, soft, and healthy. I wasn't a big fan of the scent as it was a little too botanical/medicinal. This is no longer available on their website.

130. Colgate Optic White Anti-Cavity Fluoride Toothpaste Sparkling Mint 4 oz (113 g)
I didn't actually finish this product, but I'm throwing it out because it has turned completely solid and expired at the beginning of 2013. I have a half dozen opened toothpastes in my bathroom and I decided to purge the ones that had expired and/or turned to a solid dried up mass like this one. I did not particularly like this toothpaste when I was using it because the whitening agents in it caused me to feel like my teeth were heating up as a result of either friction or a chemical process every time I used it. It did make my teeth look very white, but I wasn't willing to put up with the discomfort of the product to get that result, since teeth whitening is not something I really care about. Colgate-Palmolive tests on animals. I will not repurchase.

131. Colgate Sparkling White Mint Zing Fluoride Toothpaste 6.4 oz (181 g)
This is another toothpaste that had expired (this time in 2009... no wonder it turned into a rock!). This one, unlike the Optic White, was one of my favorite toothpastes. It made my teeth feel super clean and sparkly, as well as had an amazing mint flavor. Sadly, it is made by a company that relies on animal testing for their products, so I will not be repurchasing this product in the future (if it is even still available).

132. Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps All-One Hemp Almond Pure Castile Soap Bar 5 oz (140 g)*v
This is the best bar soap I've ever bought at a store. It reminds me of almond cookies and makes my skin feel very clean and soft. I could just stand in the shower for days smelling and using this soap. It is 100% vegan and made with fair trade ingredients. The paper wrapper is recycled (yay for recycling!) so I don't feel bad about throwing it away (we don't have recycling in my neighborhood). I have already repurchased this and will continue to repurchase this bar soap in the future!

133. Bath and Body Works Peach Nectar Moisturizing Cleansing Bar 1.5 oz (42 g) **
I have had this little soap hanging out in my soap box for quite a while (I literally have a box full of bar soap I keep under the sink. It is one of the things I collect, so I needed storage. At one point it was a shoe box, but it is now a clear plastic box with a clasp lid we used to use for food storage). This little soap was one I picked up in a hotel and is no longer available in retail stores. You can find them on EBay for a ridiculously high price, though if you really want them. I liked the scent. It was light and summery with a hint of fruity peachy goodness. It cleaned well without leaving an oily residue. I obviously won't be repurchasing this because it is unavailable.

134. Moisturizing Citrus Aloe Facial Soap
This is one of those products that I literally know nothing about. I got it at a hotel ages ago, and I don't know who makes it. It cleaned well, and it had a pleasant scent (if a bit faded from age) that made it a good facial soap.

I hope you have enjoyed this post. If you have used any of these products and have opinions on them, I would love to hear about it in the comments below! See you in a few weeks with October Empties!
