Why I Failed at a Fruitarian Lifestyle

Over a year and a half ago I tried to go straight from a diet of Cheese Dogs, Pizza, and Cheesey Ramen to a Low Fat Raw Vegan diet. I did it for three weeks before I gave up and went back to cheese dogs and ramen. In this post I'm going to talk about why I failed on the LFRV (or High Carb Raw Vegan- HCRV) lifestyle and what I would do differently if I tried it again.

Mistakes!
1. I didn't eat enough calories throughout the day.
This is probably the number one reason I couldn't do this. I wasn't eating enough. Fruits and veggies do not have as many calories as meats and cheese. It is literally impossible to eat enough calories if you eat 3 bananas and three normal sized salads as your meals throughout the day. Because I'm one of those people that doesn't really like to snack (I like to eat large meals when I'm hungry, which is usually early in the morning and at around 4:00 in the afternoon). This diet is best for those who like to snack. Or drink a lot of smoothies all day. I am a water drinker all the way. It was really hard for me to drink lots of smoothies because I would get thirsty and want to drink water. Anyway. I was eating 3000+ calories a day on high fat, high protein foods and suddenly dropped to ~ 1800 calories a day because that was all I could literally stuff into my mouth. My best tip: dried fruit and high calorie fruits. The more bananas, dates, and avocados you eat nearer to the beginning, the better you are going to feel and you won't wake up to hunger pains in the middle of the night.

2. I didn't eat enough mono meals.
Mono meals = eating one food for a meal. Examples: 5-10 bananas, 1 cantaloupe, 1/2- 1 watermelon, 1 pound of strawberries.
I tried making these really complicated salads and smoothies right off. The best thing is usually the simplest. Hungry? Eat a few dates or a banana or five. You will be full and happy.

3. I love cooking too much
Cooking is a coping mechanism for me. When I'm upset or worried, I cook. I usually don't even really want to eat the things I cook, I just want to stand there and chop, stir, and boil veggies and stews. I'm not really a baker. I never have been. I love cooking pasta sauces, bean dishes, stews, and soups. This was the hardest for me. I NEEDED to cook. And I couldn't.

4. My friends were not supportive
Many of my friends that I told about my choice to eat only raw fruits and vegetables basically told me I was crazy and couldn't live without meat and dairy. I did have some awesome friends that did support me, but not very many.

5. I didn't do enough research
I watched 20 or so videos, then tried to change my entire way of looking at food. This didn't work out so well. I have now read 80/10/10 by Douglas Graham, and watched thousands of videos about LFRV on YouTube. I have read blog posts, tumblr posts, pintrest posts, and more. Do research to find out what will work best for you so you don't starve yourself or hurt yourself in the long run.

6. I didn't do it for the right reasons
I wanted to go fully raw to lose weight. I went straight from watching people's starvation diet videos (which is what severe calorie restriction diets are) to FullyRawKristina's videos about food abundance. I later realized that I wanted to go vegan for ethical reasons and not just because I wanted to be skinny. I think this change of mindset is healthier.

7. I tried exercising too much.
Two days after I went fully raw overnight, I decided to do one of those Insanity workout things that was being offered at my school. It was at 7:00 am in January (whoever thought this up was insane) and I had to cross campus in the cold and dark. I did the first workout (the one that is supposed to be where you were starting from and measuring all other workouts from) and about died. I somehow made it all the way through, trudged across campus (still in the dark), stripped, jumped in the shower, and fell into bed in my bathrobe and slept for four hours. It was WAY too much for me. I then tried going to the gym at school more often and ended up aggravating an old ankle injury. I should have gradually started walking more or lifting a few weights, not jump into intense workout pain.

My Tips:
  • Carry dried fruit in your bag with you so you won't be tempted to eat greasy cheeseburgers when you are hungry
  • Try to eat salad at the end of the day for better digestion
  • try transitioning with a raw 'till four program- eat only raw foods for breakfast and lunch, but eat a low fat cooked vegan food for dinner. You can find some great information in the video below and a 7 Day plan here.
  • Don't think of eating cooked food as a failure. You are never a failure, and every time you eat is a chance to try again.
  • Remember that eating vegan is for the animals as much as for yourself
  • find a food you really like and try pairing it together with other foods
  • eat lots of bananas, dates, and other high calorie fruits when you first start out
  • try new foods (but be prepared for an allergic reaction- I'm now allergic to papaya, when I wasn't for many years).
  • Don't ever let yourself go hungry. Eat as much as you want, as long as it is fruit or veggie and not cooked.
So, am I planning to go fully raw, or mostly raw? At the moment, no. But will I consider it in the future? Probably.

Below are some videos you might find helpful when adopting a raw vegan or fruitarian lifestyle:

Kristina has amazing recipe videos and her bubbly, happy personality is really refreshing to watch. I adore her videos. She introduced me to the 80/10/10 Fruitarian Lifestyle. This video has tons of great information in it!

Chris Randall is another YouTuber I've been following for over a year. He's really laidback and has a great way to look at life. This Q & A video about veganism is pretty helpful.

I love Megan Elizabeth's recipes! They are always so yummy looking and full of fun fruits and veggies! Take a look at this wonderful looking Coconut Curry with Cucumber Noodles.

I hope you found this post helpful!

The Black Hole Vortex of YouTube

Hey there everyone! I had some trouble sleeping a few nights ago and watched a bunch of videos on Youtube to try to go to sleep. The black hole vortex that is YouTube swept me away and I ended up watching videos for several hours. I'm not sure it actually helped with getting me to bed, but these are the highlights of the videos I have watched in the past few weeks and wanted to share with you.

Reiki Me

This video is one of the best parodies that I have seen in a very long time! Megan has a great voice and her filming of the video was very artistic. I love the original "Wrecking Ball" song, but I find the video to be a little strange. (It's the licking of the sledge hammer that really throws me off. Miley, what is that about?)

But Where Do You Get Your Protein?

This video answers the question all vegans hate to be asked: "But where do you get your protein?" FullyRawKristina answers that question here. I love how fun and light Kristina's energy is. It makes me happy to watch her videos.

Wobble Baby, Wobble!

I absolutely adore this music video! I heard this song on the radio for the first time about 3 months ago. I immediately turned it up loud and danced in my car at the red light. This is the ultimate low-key dance. Wobble Baby, Wobble!

Look! I Can Run Through Mud!

This is a fun review of the Fitbit Flex and the Jawbone Up, two different wrist fitness monitors. I think a mud run is a great way to test if these products work. It's also fun to watch people get covered in mud while I am clean and dry.

The Weightless Project

This is an introduction video to a wonderful project. The Weightless Project is a way to motivate you to exercise by donating money to feed the world's hungry every time you workout. For every 1000 calories you burn, $1 is generated to help the Weightless Project feed the hungry. At the moment it is only setup to work with Jawbone and Fitbit, but they will be adding more devices and apps soon. As of right now, they have burned/ earned: CALORIES 26,178,218 CONTRIBUTION $18194.23. This project reminds me greatly of the game Free Rice. The premise of this game is that it quizzes you so you can better your vocabulary or geography knowledge while also earning money to feed the hungry.

OMG SHERLOCK!

This is the video that I have watched the most over the past few weeks. I am waiting with bated breath for the new season of BBC's Sherlock. This seven minute video, Many Happy Returns, is packed full of emotional moments for fans as Watson, Lestrade, and Anderson all contemplate their (supposedly) deceased friend Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock is one of the best shows I have ever seen. I have watched the first 2 seasons 5 times (all 6 episodes) and listened to the commentaries several times. And, I own both seasons on Blue Ray and both soundtracks on CD. Just another few weeks and we will all be waiting years again for the next 3 episodes!

Girls/Girls/Boys

I need to take a moment to thank my friends Rei and Lauren for introducing me to Panic! at the Disco six years ago. They have so many wonderful (and fantastically titled) songs like "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage", "There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey. You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet", and "Build God, Then We'll Talk".  This song is probably my favorite of all of them. I can't really explain why I love this song, but it gets stuck in my head and I can't get it out! So, go view this video and watch a half-naked man mesmerizingly sing at you while staring deep into your soul with his brilliant eyes!

Low Fat Raw Veganism and Fruitarianism

So it is nearly one in the morning and I can't sleep, so you are getting a new blog post!

One of the more interesting ideas about living a healthy lifestyle is the idea of eating raw foods to live a vibrant life. Many people have different reasons for eating only or mainly raw foods:
1. They believe that raw fruits and vegetables are essential to maintain a general wellbeing.
2. They think that eating living plants ensures that the plant's life force will flow into their bodies.
3. They think fruits and veggies are yummy and it is mostly what they want to eat.

I'm not sure I agree with the second one (it is a philosophical question that should be pondered at some time in the near future), but no one on the planet will tell you that eating fruits and veggies is bad for you. Actually, doctors would probably be really happy if people ate more fruits and veggies and didn't get sick as much.

There are different viewpoints out there in cyberspace about the LFRV diet. Most people push fruits as comprising the largest segment of food for the basis of the diet. Others push vegetables. I think it is easier to follow this lifestyle with fruits as the main caloric intake, just because fruits are more calorie dense than leafy greens.

Above is a great video by Freelee the Banana Girl about weight loss tips for a raw vegan diet.

FullyRawKristina also has some amazing videos. This one is about raw mistakes.

Both of these YouTube gurus base their lifestyles off of the idea that if you eat a majority of your calories from fruit carbs, you will be healthy. This idea comes from a book called 80/10/10.

A quick summary of the ideas:
1. Fruit is good for you and you should eat as much as you want everyday, all day.
2. Veggies are good for you too. Eat a salad!
3. Eating too much fat will be detrimental to your health, so don't overdo it on the raw nuts and avocados.
4. Eating grains can be detrimental to your health. Same with cooked foods. The cooking process leaches out nutritional value.
5. Eating animal products will clog your arteries and you will die.
6. Water is good for you. Drink it!
7. 80% carbs 10% fat 10% protein everyday.
8. Exercise is super important! Do it!

This is a fantastic book and I recommend that you read it if you are interested in living a Low Fat Raw Vegan lifestyle. Unlike some books on vegan lifestyles (Skinny Bitch Diet books come to mind), it is very positive and encouraging.

If you want to see the book 80/10/10 by Dr. Graham, you can find it Here.

I do not personally live this lifestyle, but I try to incorporate as many fruits and vegetables into my diet as possible. Is it possible to live solely on fruit? I think so. If people can subsist on Top Ramen and Diet Coke I think people can thrive on fruits. Also I don't know anyone who ever complained about feeling bad from eating too many fruits and veggies. (Pizza, beer, cheese balls, hot dogs- yes. Apples- no. Unless you are allergic to apples, then that is a different story).

Many people get really emotional when talking about eating raw because it is a very different way of living compared to the typical steak and potatoes lifestyle that America has embraced. It is really hard to go to a restaurant and find raw foods. This is one of the main reasons (in my humble opinion) people have problems with this lifestyle. We socialize around food. We eat out a lot! It is hard to explain to people that a salad the size of a plate will leave you hungry in about an hour when all you are eating are fruits and veggies. You have to eat A LOT of food on this diet. About twice as much food as you normally would on a Standard American Diet (SAD). If you don't eat enough you will get the most horrible cravings (see above videos for tips on how to avoid this!) and you will end up at your neighborhood fast food joint at 2:00 am ordering cheeseburgers with extra orders of fries because you are RAVENOUS. (This is from experience... not what you want to be doing).

So the pros and cons of LFRV versus Cooked Vegan Diet

Pros-
You get to eat as much as you want.
You get to eat lots of water rich foods so you won't be thirsty at all.
The health benefits are amazing.
Very little time is spent preparing food.
Harder to get sick from ill-prepared food.
Discovering new fruits is exciting and strange.
More energy and restful sleep.

Cons-
You have to eat huge amounts of food.
You spend a lot of time eating.
You don't get to cook (some people would consider this a positive, but I love stirring red beans for hours over a hot stove)
You don't get to eat foods like beans and rice (two of my favorite foods)
Hard to eat out at restaurants.
You have to explain to everyone why you won't eat the (insert random food here) that they made for you.

If you are looking to incorporate some of these ideas into your already vegan diet, try this:

Instead of a sandwich for lunch, have a really big salad.
Drink some carrot juice when you first wake up and it will jumpstart your day (I love carrot juice btw!)
Instead of pasta for dinner, julienne some zucchini and squash to make your carbs veggie carbs instead of grain carbs.
Eat fruit for snacks instead of chips (they may be vegan, but they are not healthy)
Don't drink coffee or caffeinated tea. Drink juice instead, or herbal teas.
Don't be heavy handed with the oils, nuts, coconut butters, avocados, and seeds. Add more carrots, celery, tomatoes, and cabbage to salads and wraps to get that satisfying crunch.
Make frozen banana smoothies. BEST DESERT EVER!
